Have you ever woken up, disoriented and a little confused? Not exactly sure where you are, or how you got here?
Well, that happened to me the morning of November 9th, 2016. And I’ve been a little dazed ever since.
Donald Trump had become President of the United State of America. Donald Trump. The guy from TV who loved gold leaf paint and busty blondes and saying things like “You’re fired” and “Where’s Obama’s birth certificate?”.
And then to make the whole situation more surreal, I found out that people I knew most of my life – people I loved and respected – had voted for him. And they were happy he won. America was going to be great again, they said.
It truly felt as if some 50’s horror movie had come to life. A brain-eating organism had eaten all the logical and critical thinking skills of over 63,000,000 American voters.
I was in a Strange Land. It wasn’t a dream. It wasn’t even a nightmare. It is our reality.
We are the Baby Boomers. How did this happen on our watch? We are the progeny of the Greatest Generation for God’s sake! How did we let this happen?
Turns out, it didn’t happen over night. No. We’ve lived in our Strange Land for almost two years now and we’re not naïve anymore. It started a very long time ago. When religion became a life-style brand. And education became something to be scoffed at. When the 24 hour news cycle became a way to scare us into believing horrible tragedies were behind every corner. And when the lines between journalism and entertainment became blurry.
I’m not sure how we got here but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t an accident. So, let’s delve into it and see what happens.
And let’s see if we can get our country back.
